PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a forward and backward movement switching hand pump of a vibration compacting machine capable of safely stopping a machine body by returning an operation lever automatically to a neutral position when an operator releases the operation lever if a danger occurs when the operator runs the machine body by rotating the operation lever to a forward or backward position. SOLUTION: A guide cylinder 40 is pressed against the inner one end of a cylinder tube 27, and the tip part of a servo rod 34 having a cylinder piston 28 is slidably connected to the rear end of the guide cylinder 40. When a hand is released from the operation lever 30 while the machine body is moving forward, the servo rod 34 is returned to the neutral position by a mechanical returning force from an exciting apparatus 4. When the machine body is moving backward, the guide cylinder 40 automatically returns the servo rod 34 to the neutral position by the force of a spring 39 and stops the machine body safely.
