PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal optical element which has superior shock resistance and its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal optical element has an electrooptical function layer, containing liquid crystal and macromolecules, sandwiched between a pair of substrates with electrodes and enters a light transmission state and a light scattering state by changing the alignment state of the liquid crystal according as whether a voltage is applied; and macromolecules form a plurality of columns of resin, which have long axes nearly in the normal direction of surfaces of the substrates with the electrodes and tilted. The electrooptical function layer contains≥10 wt.% macromolecules and liquid crystal in the light transmission state is aligned nearly in the normal direction of the substrate surfaces.
