PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely detect the disconnection state of a sensor element of a semiconductor gas sensor regardless of existence/absence of gas to be checked. SOLUTION: In this gas detection device, concentrations of a single kind or a plurality of kinds of gases are detected by using the semiconductor gas sensor 21 having the sensor element R<SB>S</SB>heated by a heater G<SB>H</SB>driven in the ON/OFF state or in the high/low state intermittently. In the device, when it is determined by a determination means 3B that the output change quantity of the semiconductor gas sensor 21 at the transfer time from one to the other in the ON and OFF states of driving of the heater R<SB>H</SB>or at the transfer time from one to the other in the high and low states of driving of the heater R<SB>H</SB>measured by an output change quantity measuring means 3A does not exceed the minimum quantity of the output change of the semiconductor gas sensor 21 generated at the transfer time in the normal conduction state of the element R<SB>S</SB>, a disconnection recognition means 3C recognizes that the element R<SB>s</SB>is in the disconnection state.
