A coating composition useful for building materials products, especially roofing surfaces, is provided. The coating composition provides durable exterior protection to surfaces that it applied to, and it has intumescent a nd reflective properties. The caoting composition includes a mixture of a polymeric binder, at least one intumescent agent, a polymeric carrier and a pigment. The pigment is present in the coating composition in amount that is capable of providing a coating that has an initial energy efficiency rating greater than or equal to 0.65 for a low-sloped roof, or an initial energy efficiency greater than or aqual to 0.25 for a steep-sloped roof.
