PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display element which has a wide driving temperature range, a wide viewing angle characteristic, and a high-speed response characteristic. SOLUTION: A dielectric substance layer 3 made of a medium which is optically isotropic when applied with no electric field and optically anisotropic when applied with an electric field is provided between two substrates (substrates 1 and 2) facing each other. Then inter-digital electrodes 4 and 5 for applying the electric field to the dielectric substance layer 3 are arranged on the surface of the substrate 1 which faces the substrate 2 opposite each other.
