The invention relates to a method for treating the surface of a workpiece (1) with a pulverulent additive (3) using a welding beam (5), said pulverulent additive being introduced into the welding beam (5) in a treatment region (9) on the workpiece surface. The aim of the invention is to optimise said method in terms of the powder consumption. To achieve this, the pulverulent additive (3) is fixed in the treatment region (9) by means of a film (11), prior to coming into contact with the welding beam (5).
