Thin fiber measurement method in which a fiber (5) is irradiated so that the fiber modulates the radiation intensity. The modulated radiation is measured using a recording arrangement (8, 9). The characteristics of the modulated radiation are compared with standards stored in a database. If there is a match with a standard stored in the database, the corresponding dimension is output. The invention also relates to a corresponding system for carrying out the method.
