Class 123(1) A buoyant anode assembly for the protection against corrosion of sea water ballasted oil tanks of tanker ships consists of a boxlike structure made from angle members 1 connected at top and bottom by cross bars 2, spaced apart, bar-like anodes 3 being secured between the angles 1 to form the box sides. The box structure which has a slatted or solid bottom is filled with a buoyant substance 10 such as wood, expanded rubber or expanded polystyrene or contains cylinders of gas or air and is closed by cover (not shown). Tubes 5 are welded to the box corners and receive guide chains 6 which are secured between the tank roof and an insulated platform 8 on to which the anode assembly falls as the tank is emptied. The assembly is connected to the tank by cables 11. Stops may be provided on the chains 6 or the assembly may be secured to the tank bottom by an anchor chain of appropriate length to prevent the assembly from rising above the position giving optimum current distribution over the tank surface.</p> |
