PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the degree of freedom of controlling a paper feed motor in a recorder capable of opening or closing a valve device by using the paper feed motor. SOLUTION: This printer 1 has an ink cartridge independent from a carriage 25 provided to the bottom of the printer 1 and ink can be supplied to a recording head through an ink tube 43. The valve device 40 for opening or closing an ink channel is provided to the ink channel. The opening or closing of the channel by the valve device 40 is carried out by means of a rack-and-pinion mechanism 50 driven by the paper feed motor. In the rack-and-pinion 50, a pinion gear is retracted from a rack by an urging means to be in a position where the pinion gear is not engaged therewith. When the carriage 25 pushes the pinion gear, the pinion gear is engaged with the rack. In a condition that the carriage 25 does not push the pinion gear, the opening/closing operation of the ink channel is not carried out, and then the paper feed roller can be flexibly controlled to be driven.
