PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce an excessive whitening phenomenon in a principal viewing direction of a display screen of a liquid crystal display device. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device 201 is constructed in such a way that a reference voltage generating part 18 generates a reference voltage to be a reference of a gray scale displaying voltage with respect to an input gray scale so as to optimize a VT (voltage-transmittance) characteristic in a direction inclined from a normal to the display screen, for the purpose of reducing the excessive whitening phenomenon in the principal viewing direction on the display screen of a liquid crystal display panel 101. The reference voltage generated in the reference voltage generating part 18 is sent to a liquid crystal driving part 17. The liquid crystal driving part 17 applies the gray scale displaying voltage to the liquid crystal display panel 101, based on the reference voltage generated in the reference voltage generating part 18, and drives pixel electrodes.
