Coating for the outer surface of a medical implant comprises magnesium, a magnesium alloy or a magnesium salt. Independent claims are also included for: (1) implant with a coating as above; (2) use of magnesium, magnesium alloys and/or a magnesium salts to prepare a pharmaceutical formulation that inhibits proliferation of human smooth muscle cells in the vicinity of sclerotic, especially atherosclerotic, lesions; (3) use of magnesium, magnesium alloys and/or a magnesium salts to prepare a pharmaceutical formulation for local restenosis prevention following stent implantation; (4) pharmaceutical formulation comprising magnesium, magnesium alloys and/or a magnesium salts that is adapted for intravascular release after implantation into a vessel. ACTIVITY : Vasotropic; Antiarteriosclerotic. MECHANISM OF ACTION : Inhibits proliferation of human smooth muscle cells.
