Formats of different defect management methods are applied to information recording media having the same physical characteristics according to presence/absence of a cartridge. A recording medium having a data recording area can be mounted on an information processing device. The data recording area includes a user area to which a logical address is assigned in accordance with the write unit. The information processing device includes: a judgment unit for judging whether a first recording medium contained in a cartridge or a second recording medium not contained in a cartridge is mounted according to the physical characteristic of the recording medium mounted; a processor for instructing to form the data recording area as a user area and a spare area when the second recording medium is mounted according to the judgment result and instructing to form the entire data recording area as a user area when the first recording medium is mounted; and a recording area for forming a user area and/or a spare area in the data recording area of the recoding medium mounted according to the instruction. The spare area is used as an alternative when a defect exists in the recording unit of the user area.
