The following invention relates to a device for determining the speech latency across at least one network element (10) of a communication network, which is designed to transmit a speech signal encoded in digital data either in a circuit switched or in a packet-oriented way, wherein at the input of the network element (10) is arranged a first interface (12) and at the output of the network element (10) a second interface (14), comprising a means for allocating a timestamp to the data packets of a sample of data packets at the two interfaces (12, 14), a means (20, 22) for recording the allocated timestamps together with the corresponding data packets, a means (32, 34) for decoding the recorded data packets at both interfaces for generating a respective envelope in the time domain, a means (30) for performing a cross-correlation between both envelopes for determining correlating areas of the first and second envelope and a means (38, 40) for determining a value for the speech latency between the first and second interface (12, 14) from the associated timestamps of correlating areas of the first and second envelope.
