A method and an apparatus for balancing a motor vehicle wheel, in which after an unbalance measuring operation at least one balancing weight is fixed in at least one balancing plane in a given angular position to the rim of the motor vehicle wheel, wherein the scanned rim surface is compared to contour features of stored rim surfaces and the at least one balancing plane of the stored rim with the best match is determined for the balancing procedure.
