[Also in Group XXV] A rivet comprises a stem 20, Fig. 2, with one or more reduced cross-sectioned parts 22 . . . 24 and a head 21 at one end, and a sleeve 13 applied over the other end and pressed against parts 10, 11 to be joined by an anvil 16 while the stem is pulled by collet 15 engaging extension 27, and a ring 17 is drawn along the outside of the sleeve to swage the sleeve into the part or parts 22 . . . 24. In a modification, the extension 27 is omitted and the sleeve 13, Fig. 4, has a lip 40 which is pressed into grooves 24 by the anvil so that as the ring 17 is moved it places the stem in tension. In yet another modification, the lip is omitted and the head 21 is supported while the collar is swaged. |
