The present invention to a fas- tener (10) which comprises a shaft por- tion (16) and an integral head portion (12), an assembly comprising a sheet metal part (52) and the fastener (10), a method for manufacturing the assembly, and a die (54) for manufacturing the assembly. The un- derside (18) of the head portion (12) adja- cent the shaft portion (16) includes a plu- rality of spaced shallow pockets (20) which entrap the sheet metal. The shaft portion (16) includes at least one depression (28). The die (54) includes a central opening (60) which receives the shaft portion (16), and a crown area (64) surrounding the opening, which crown area (64) includes peaks (72) and valleys (74) which deform the sheet metal part (52) into the pockets (20) in the head portion (12) and radially inwardly into the depression on the shaft portion (16) thereby forming a fastener (10) and sheet metal part (52) assembly.
