The present invention relates to a process for the continuous measurement of CO2 emission in soils, sediments and other systems with microbiological breathing. The invention uses a measuring principle based on a traditional absorption technique in an alkaline medium; the same is an open system having a continuous air flow. The entrapped CO2 is absorbed and precipitated as carbonate by a Ba(OH)2 solution, thereby a stoichiometric reduction in the ionic strength of the solution is caused. Temperature changes and the conductivity of the alkaline solution are automatically registered by a conventional conductivity meter; the data is subsequently transferred to a personal computer so as to be stored. The fluctuation in the measurements of conductivity and temperature changes are automatically corrected, which causes the process to be independent relative to the temperature control and manual calibration.
