The service is defined in standardized tagged documents and the rules are included in CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). The transformation device can read the modification rules applicable to the accessing client terminal directly from CSS and then apply them to a standardized tagged document. The formatting and control method comprises the following steps: (1) handling a client request to access the service; (2) determining the requesting client terminal type; (3) sending a request is to the server handling the service instructing it to make the contents available in tagged form; (4) providing rules with which the contents in tagged form can be transformed using a transformation device in order to adapt them to different types of client terminal; (5) transforming the contents according to the rules applicable to the type of client terminal; and (6) providing a CSS which describes the formatting of the material to be displayed by the client terminal making the request.
