Roller chains (2) with flaps (6) hinged to reinforced links (7) to form a conveyer in a housing (3) which is straight in plan view and is curved (29) in side view. The flaps hang down vertically between the end rollers. Each flap is automatically hinged up at the top of the chain run before passing round the top roller. There is an enlarged protective housing (16) round each end which can accommodate the flaps swinging round the end roller. There is a swarf inlet with a flap lowering mechanism (26) at the lower end of the channel.
