Stabilizing knitted semi-finished fabrics, e.g. for reinforcement in composite vehicle parts, involves inclusion of a melt-adhesive binder yarn

Knitted fabrics, especially in multi-layered structures, are stabilized by including up to 50 % of a yarn that can act as a melt adhesive. On leaving the knitting machine the fabric is heated, e.g. by infra-red radiation, while still under tension. The yarns can be of different thickness and can adhere on the surface only or can partially melt. One or both sides of the fabric can be treated.
