PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system for detecting cell culture status capable of simplifying the detection processing for the cell culture status. SOLUTION: This system comprises a camera 9 for photographing a medium under cell culture via a microscope, multivaluating means 3 and 5 for multivaluating two-dimensional image data photographed by the camera 9, and run length measuring means 3 and 5 for determining the run length of an image data portion corresponding or not corresponding to cells in a straight measurement line crossing the two-dimensional image data multivaluated by the means 3 and 5. Thereby, the run length represents a numerical value correlating with a value corresponding to the cell culture status such as cell density. As a result, since the processing carried out by the system as the detection processing for the cell culture status is enough with the multivaluation processing for the photographed two-dimensional image data and the processing for determining the run length, the detection processing for the cell culture status can be simplified.
