PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic resist adjuster in which a burden on a CPU is reduced by reducing memory resources when automatic resist adjustment is performed in the subscanning direction utilizing an image reading function, and to provide an automatic resist adjusting method and an image reader. SOLUTION: The automatic resist adjuster comprises a document table glass 1 having a reading area mounting a document and a nonreading area bordering on a reading start position, a carriage 15 moving across the reading area R and the nonreading area N while reading an image, a resist searching means 37 performing image reading in the direction of reading area or nonreading area while setting a document detection area without adding a resist shift, and then performing image reading in the direction of reading area or nonreading area while adding the resist shift and setting a document detection area, and a means for limiting the width of the document detection area by reading an image through the resist searching means.
