PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a batch type carbonization apparatus, wherein the outer wall of the side face of the carbonization chamber is covered with a heat insulating material and which is cheap, does not need a wide space and can shorten the time required to cool the furnace inside. SOLUTION: In the apparatus the heat insulating material 10a covering the outer wall 9 of the side face of the carbonization chamber 1 is so fitted as to be movable to make a space between it and the surface of the outer wall 9. This enables the time for cooling the furnace inside to be shortened since, when the cooling of the furnace inside is carried out, the heat insulating material 10a is moved to make the parallel spaceδbetween the surface of the outer wall 9 and it, an ascending air current is produced into the space between the heat insulating material 10a and the outer wall 9 which open the spaceδ, and by this ascending air current the convection cooling of the outer wall 9 is performed.
