<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of quickly and economically performing variable power operation by combining the image of a specified variable power ratio which is stored in a memory and a finely adjusted image to composite one identical picture and determining a required variable power image from the combined image. <P>SOLUTION: An image 80a stored in a memory M0 is copied to a memory M1 to obtain an image 81a. Information of a frame line 81b is added to the image 81a. Then variable power printing 82c is added and variable power processing for the image is performed at each set power. The image 81a stored in the memory M1 is processed at a variable power ratio of 141% and the processed image is stored in a memory M2 as an image 82a. At the time, the frame 81b is also processed at the same variable power ratio and stored as a frame 82b. Simultaneously the variable power printing 82c also is stored. An image 83a of -1%, a frame 83b and variable power printing "140%" 83c are stored in a memory M3 and an image 84a of +1%, a frame 84b and the variable power printing "140%" 83c are stored in a memory M4.
