PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illuminator, obtaining the high utilization efficiency of light source light and realizing further miniaturization of a Koehler illumination system than in the conventional manner. SOLUTION: The illuminator is equipped with a light source, having a light-emitting part and an emitting surface for emitting light from the light-emitting part, and the Koehler illumination system, where a collector lens and a condenser lens are successively arranged from the light source side so as to illuminate an irradiation surface and is set so that the area of the emitting surface is 0.001 to 1 mm<SP>2</SP>.
