PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyester monofilament, maintaining physical properties such as its high strength and high modulus by reducing a concern on the shaving of its surface part as much as possible, and especially suitably used as a screen gauze of a highly precise printing. SOLUTION: This polyester monofilament consists of a polyester of main recurring unit of ethylene terephthalate having 0.60-1.10 intrinsic viscosity,≥5.0 cN/dtex breaking strength and 3.0-4.0 cN/dtex stress on 5% elongation, and satisfying the following (1)-(2) conditions simultaneously. (1) -0.003≤Δn(0.9)-Δn(0.7)≤-0.0015, (2) -0.0015≤Δn(0.7)-Δn(0)≤0.0015 (wherein,Δn(r) is a birefringence at a position of standardized radius (r), andΔn(0) is a birefringence at the center of fiber axis).
