N,N'-dihydroxyalkyl-perylene pigments (I) are new. N,N'-dihydroxyalkyl-perylene pigments of formula (I) are new. R 1>-R 4>= 1-37C linear alkyl in which 1-10 CH 2groups can be replaced by CO, O, S, Se, Te, cis or trans CH=CH (in which one CH can be replaced by N), acetylenic groups, any divalent residue of phenyl, pyridine, thiophene, naphthalene (in which 1 or 2 CH may be replaced by N) or anthracene (in which 1 or 2 CH may be replaced by N); and up to 12 hydrogen atoms on CH 2groups can be substituted independently (including on the same C atoms) by fluoro, chloro, bromo, iodo, cyano or linear 1-18C alkyl (in which 1-6 CH 2groups may be replaced by any of the groups or atoms specified above as replacements for CH 2; and up to 12 hydrogen atoms on CH 2of alkyl may be substituted independently by the groups specified above as substituents); instead of substituents, free valencies on methine residues or quaternary C atoms may be linked in pairs to form rings, e.g. cyclohexane; and R 5>-R 8>= hydrogen or as for R 1>-R 4>.
