A microstructure for chemical processing and manufacture is disclosed. The microstructure (10) includes a plurality of microchannel walls (22), which define at least one microchannel for accommodating chemicals to be processed. At least one coating layer (48) including a support and an active element is disposed on or between to the plurality of microchannel walls (22), the coating layer (48) including a catalyst or a catalyst support powder, and a sol-gel binder. A method of manufacturing a microstructure for enhanced chemical processing and manufacture is also disclosed.
