A flexible packaging material (I) for sterile products comprises a film or film laminate (B) having barrier properties comprising a support film (11) of polyamide, polyester or polypropylene having a thin ceramic coating (12) whereby the ceramic coating (12) has a functional coating comprising an inorganic-organic hybrid polymer (13). An Independent claim is included for a process for the production of the packaging material (I) by application of a functional coating of an inorganic-organic hybrid polymer (13) onto the ceramic layer (12) by a pressing process.
