PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording apparatus which can expand a driving speed region of a carriage while avoiding the use of an unstable driving frequency region, and a control method. SOLUTION: In this recording apparatus, a recording head is mounted on the carriage which is to be driven by a carriage driving motor, and an image is recorded on a recording sheet which is conveyed onto a platen by the recording head. A variable speed mechanism 91 is connected to the carriage driving motor. The recording apparatus is equipped with a control means which switches a mode of the mechanism 91 into a variable speed one depending on a specified driving frequency of the carriage driving motor, and which sets a driving frequency, set according to a change gear ratio of the variable speed mode, to be an actual driving frequency of the carriage driving motor.
