PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus realizing a higher image quality output by providing a device for correcting the irregularity of the surface potential of a drum by using a mechanism with which a light transmissive amount is changed in accordance with the surface potential of the drum. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes an image carrier on which an electrostatic latent image is formed, and a developing device for developing the electrostatic latent image on the image carrier with developer, and the image carrier is charged by using an electrifying device. The apparatus includes a transparent electrode plate, a polarizing plate, an element having an electrooptical effect, a polarizing plate, a transparent electrode plate and a light source in order from the image carrier side so as to make the irregularity of charging potential small by changing the light transmissive amount in accordance with the charging potential generated on the image carrier.
