PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a water-absorbing composite material, which further improves a conventional method for producing a water-absorbing composite material with a redox type polymerization initiator, and by which the water-absorbing composite material little containing a left monomer can efficiently be produced. SOLUTION: This method for producing the water-absorbing composite material comprises adhering a monomer aqueous solution comprising a redox type polymerization initiator comprising hydrogen peroxide and an ascorbic acid compound, a water-soluble acrylic monomer, a crosslinking agent, and iron ion to a fibrous substrate, and then polymerizing the water-soluble acrylic monomer.
