PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cutter with a multilayer coating, which has excellent operability, high cost efficiency, and can form a cutting edge having a long service life. SOLUTION: The tool is coated at least on an area to be exposed to wear by a vacuum treatment, and a coating consists of at least one hard layer deposited directly on the tool, and at least one friction reducing layer superimposed on the outline of the hard layer. The grain size of the hard and friction reducing layers has a linear average width of less than 1μm. Preferably the grain size of the friction reducing layer is less than 0.1μm, and the hard layer has a compressive internal stress of more than 0.2 Gigapascal. The hard layer is selected from the group consisting of a metal carbide, a metal nitride, a metal carbonitride, titanium, hafnium, zirconium, and alloys thereof with other metals. Preferably the friction reducing layer contains a metal carbide such as tungsten carbide and carbon, and a carbon content of the friction reducing layer is more than 61%.
