A holographic recording/reproduction device (10) includes a spatial light modulator (18C) for converting digital information into a 2-dimensional image and intensity-modulating the object light according to the 2-dimensional image. The spatial light modulator (18C) divides the 2-dimensional image into unit pixel blocks each consisting of four or more pixels and displays the 2-dimensional image by mixing at least two types of encoded patterns where the number of ON pixels in the unit pixel blocks is different. During reproduction, the light quantity of each unit pixel block is detected by a 2-dimensional photo-detector (24) to determine the number of ON pixels and a threshold value is set before performing image detection by an imaging element (22B).
