880,648. Cable identification. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. March 24, 1960 [April 1, 1959], No. 10483/60. Class 36. [Also in Group V] A conductor having a coloured stripe deeply embedded in its PTFE insulation is made by compacting PTFE into a preform to the surface of which is applied a longitudinal strip of pigment, the preform being then extruded on to the conductor. Mixed powdered PTFE and organic lubricant are placed in a tubular former 10 comprising top and bottom members 12, 11, and plug 18 axially on a rod 17 and a plunger 20, template member 25 being omitted. The resin is tamped into a cohesive preform, capable of absorbing ink, by plunger 20 actuated by rod 22, then top 12 is removed and template 25 substituted. A strong pigment suspended in naphtha is sprayed on to and absorbed into the preform through window 28, the preform is compressed, fed into a conventional insulation extruder to coat the conductor which is finally heat treated. The wire is twisted to give a helical stripe.
