Linear polyvinyl acetate characterized in that the intrinsic viscosity thereof remains the same after conversion to polyvinyl alcohol and reacetylation to polyvinyl acetate is made by polymerizing vinyl acetate at a temperature of 0 DEG C. to - 100 DEG C. in contact with about 0, to 10% by weight, based on the vinyl acetate, of a tri-alkyl aluminium compound, or a dialkyl aluminium hydride. The contacting agent may be trimethyl tripropyl, triisopropyl, triisobutyl, or tributyl aluminium or diisobutyl aluminium hydride, dimethyl aluminium hydride, or dipropyl aluminium hydride. The polymerization is preferably effected in the presence of a solvent or diluent such as tetrahydrofuran, hexane, octane, decane, pentane, gasoline, or diethyl ether.
