PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to control luminance without degrading the gradation characteristics, even when the average luminance over the entire part of a screen is low at controlling of the screen luminance for the purpose of reducing the electric power consumption of a plasma display panel (hereinafter to be referred to as PDP). SOLUTION: The driving gear 10 of the PDP is equipped with an amplifier section 12 for multiplying image data by an amplification factor K and supplying the same to the PDP 1, a coefficient calculating section 15 for calculating the amplification factor K, and a luminance control section 16 for controlling the screen luminance of the PDP 1. The coefficient calculation section 15 calculates the maximum amplification factor K, to the extent of not causing loss of details in the highlighted portions in the image data inputted into the amplifier section 12. The luminance control section 16 controls the screen luminance so as to lower the display luminance of the PDP 1, when the image data after amplification is bright, on the average and to raise the display luminance of the PDP 1, when the image data after amplification is dark, on the average.
