PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reliably discriminate the size of a photographic film with simple configuration. SOLUTION: An image reader 2 is provided with an area detection sensor 47 for detecting an image recording area 60 of a photographic film 40. The area detection sensor 47 is provided in a position spaced from the center of a read frame 49 by a distance d in the direction of a film insertion hole 42, wherein the distance d is given by d=dh(n+1) (dh: the distance between the centers of adjacent frames of the half size film 40 and n: a natural number equal to or larger than 2). A system controller 16 discriminates whether the image recording area 60 is of a full size and half size, on the basis of the detection frequency with which the area detection sensor 47 detects the image recording area 60 within a prescribed time.
