<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device for reducing the image quality deterioration called vertical smear causing a difference in display luminance due to the presence or absence of a fluctuation in a signal line by a fluctuation in an effective value that occurs as a result of the fluctuation of voltage level in propagating the fluctuation of the signal line to a pixel electrode through a capacitor Cds in a panel while minimizing an increase of electric power consumption in a driving method wherein an alternating current period enabling the reduction of the electric power consumption is a frame period. <P>SOLUTION: The display device is installed with a switch for shorting all the signal lines in the panel and a switch for turning the output of a gray scale voltage generating section in a signal line driving circuit to high impedance while all the signal lines are shorted.
