<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide VA-type and IPS-type liquid displays with markedly improved angle of field. <P>SOLUTION: The optical display has a pair of substrates arranged facing each other, having an electrode at least in one of them, a liquid display layer held in between the substrates, and a first polarizer disposed at the outside of the liquid display layer. The product ▵n×d of a thickness of dμm of the liquid display and a refractive index anisotropy ▵n, is 0.1-1.0μm. The first polarizer has a pair of protective films, and at least one of the protective films has a slow axis substantially coinciding with the direction, wherein an average refractive index of the film surface becomes a maximum. The slow axis of the protective film near the liquid crystal layer crosses the an absorbing axis of the polarizer. The protective film disposed near the liquid display layer(with a thickness of d<SB>1</SB>nm, main average refractive indexes in the face of nx, ny (where ny<nx), a main average refractive index in the thickness direction of nz) satisfies -30nm≤ä(nx-ny)×d<SB>1</SB>}≤50nm, and -50nm≤[ä(nx+ny)/2-nz}×d<SB>1</SB>]≤300nm in an arbitrary wavelength λin a visible ray region. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
