PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To read a half-sized image without complicated works, and to suppress deterioration of image quality to a minimum. SOLUTION: Regarding a system controller 17 for the image reading apparatus 2, when it is discriminated that the film is a half-sized 135 film 35 based on the detection result by a frame detection sensor 66, a distance d1 between the leading end 96 of the 135 film 35 and the leading end 93a of the leading frame 91a is obtained, based on the detection results by a 2nd leading end detection sensor 65 and the frame detection sensor 66; and when the distance d1 is smaller than a distance d2 given by d2=(df-dh)/2, provided that the length of the full size image frame 90 and the length of a half size image frame 91 in the carrying direction are expressed by (df) and (dh), respectively, the drive of a film-carrying motor 74 is stopped so that the 135 film 35 is stopped, at a position where the leading and trailing ends 96 and 97 of the 135 film 35 is brought in press contact with a pressing plate 81.
