PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable defects in a photoreceptor to be specified, before a web is cut and formed into an endless imaging belt. SOLUTION: A light source L outputs a continuous uniform light I to be incident on a free-span web section FS. A reflected light image capturing system RL receives a light R, which is output by the light source I and reflected by the free-span web section FS, and generates reflected light image data RD representing the reflected light R. A transmitted light image capturing system TL receives a light T, which is output by the light source I and transmitted through the free-span web section FS, and generates transmitted light image data TD, representing the transmitted light T. These image data sets RD, TD are input to an image processing unit IPU, and a defect detection is carried out. Then, a flag is given to a defective region or the like. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
