<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming system that is simple and capable of securely preventing unnecessary consumption of the power of post-processing machines which are individually connected to an image forming apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: In the image forming system in which the image forming apparatus which sends recording paper to the post-processing machines and a plurality of post-processing machines which post-process the recording paper are connected together, the image forming apparatus includes: a first detection means for detecting an external input concerning the start of the preparing operation of the post-processing machines; a judging means for judging on the basis of the first detection means the post-processing machine that requires the preparing operation; and an image forming apparatus communication means for sending information on the basis of the judgement by the judging means in order to instruct the post-processing machine to start the preparing operation. The plurality of processing machines each have a post-processing machine communication means that receives an instruction from the image forming apparatus, and a status shift means for bringing the post-processing machine selected by the reception from the post-processing machine communication means into a standby status by starting the preparing operation from a stopped status.
