<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an antireflection coating, having superior antireflection characteristics with respect to light having a large incidence angle, and to provide an optical element having the antireflection coating. <P>SOLUTION: The antireflection coating 2 is composed of a plurality of layers formed on the surface 11 of a base member 1, the refractive indices of a base member 2 and the respective layers successively become smaller, in the order starting from the base member 1, the difference in the refractive indices of the respective layers and the adjacent layer, and of the base member 1 and the layer 21 being made to contact therewith, is 0.02 to 0.5, and the thickness of the respective layers is 30 to 200 nm.
