PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet feeding device of low-cost construction capable of certainly preventing a double feed of paper sheets. SOLUTION: The sheet feeding device is equipped with a sheet feed tray 21 to accommodate sheets P, a pickup roll 22 to pick up the sheets P, a sheet separation part 23 to send only one of the picked-up sheets to the downstream and push back the following sheets to the upstream when two or more sheets are picked up at one time, and a sheet send-out part 24 to receive the sheets P fed to the downstream by the separation part 23 and send them further to downstream, wherein at the time of sending out each sheet from inside the feed tray 21, the pickup roll 22 contacts with and separates from the sheets in the feed tray 21 at two timings, the first timing at which the sheet in the feed tray 21 is picked up and the second immediately before the trailing edge of the sheet handed over from the separation part 23 to the send-out part 24 separates from the separation part 23.
