In a die and plunger machine for erecting box blanks having tongues and slots 3e, 3f of the kind shown in Fig. 7, a magnetic device 9 is provided to open the slots 3f. The magnet is movably mounted on the plunger 1, and normally retracted within the plunger, and is projected at the appropriate point in the operating cycle under the influence of a magnet 13 in the die so as to push out the side 3b of the blank which lies between the slots 3f, thus permitting insertion of the tongues or lugs 3e on further downward movement of the plunger. Upward movement of the magnet 9 is limited by a stop 14. When the piston reaches the bottom of die 2 spring urged rollers 15 deform the inserted lugs 3g and lock them in their slots. The device 9 may be a permanent magnet pivoted at 10 and having a counterweight 12. |
