The cigarette has a fuel element (10) surrounded by an insulating and retaining jacket material (12) which are made of fibre glass. In the jacket is an intermediate layer (14) of tobacco paper positioned between two layers of fibre glass. Behind the fuel element (18) is an aerosol generator which is held by a substrate plug (22). This substrate is positioned in a barrier tube (26) with voids (28,30) at either end. This forms a substrate section or component (20).
