PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording/reproducing device capable of improving usability for a user by using the limited recording capacity of a recording medium more efficiently. SOLUTION: This device has a first mode of recording a first compressed digital signal on a recording medium 109, and a second mode of reproducing a second digital signal compressed from the recording medium, compressing the digital signal again at a higher compression ratio by a compressing part 106, and recording the signal again on the recording medium. A control unit 113 simultaneously implements the first and second modes. The control unit stores information 215 indicating a compression ratio at recording time, information 217 permitting the conversion of the compression ratio and re-recording it, and information 218 indicating the history of re-recording as the management information of each digital signal recorded on the recording medium.
