PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve a remarkable reduction in size, weight and cost of an apparatus by appropriately disposing a camera and a sensor for obtaining an image pickup trigger and to improve visibility and work efficiency at the same time by additionally installing a sorting mechanism with good workability, in an apparatus for conducting a specified sorting treatment by recognizing the image of an address printing zone of mails using a CCD camera. SOLUTION: In this mail sorting apparatus, the CCD camera is so disposed as to pick up the image of the mail at the bottom layer just before being fed, based on a signal detected by a sensor for detecting mails conveyed by a conveying mechanism fed with papers in advance.
