Provided is a polymer represented by the structural formula, <?in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="lead"?>-(HC-CR)<SUB>n</SUB>-, <?in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="tail"?> (n in the formula is an integer of 30 or larger and R is -C<SUB>6</SUB>H<SUB>4</SUB>-OC<SUB>x</SUB>H<SUB>2x+1</SUB>, -C<SUB>6</SUB>H<SUB>4</SUB>-N-NCOC<SUB>x</SUB>H<SUB>2x+1</SUB>, -C<SUB>6</SUB>H<SUB>4</SUB>-NHCOC<SUB>x</SUB>H<SUB>2x+1</SUB>, o-trifluoromethylphenyl or o-(2-thienyl)phenyl, x being a positive integer and -C<SUB>6</SUB>H<SUB>4</SUB>- being o-, m- or p-phenylene group) which is a polymer having a regular spiral structure of the molecular chains and subject to reversible changes in the shapes and peak wavelengths of the absorption and emission spectra by means-of the reversible changes in the pitch of the spiral structure by impartment of a stimulation or by a solvent treatment or alteration thereof.
